Immovable properties which are at least fifty years old and which fulfil the other criteria of the Monuments and Historic Buildings Act 1988 [Monumentenwet 1988] are protected as historic listed buildings. The same applies to sites with a high archaeological value and urban and village conservation areas.

Importance of heritage

Heritage is the source of the story of the history of the Netherlands. Future generations must also be made aware of the country's authentic past. It provides the residents of villages, towns or cities, provinces and the country as a whole with an insight into the history of their own environment and it also adds to their own identity.

Proper spatial planning means that all the interests which have an influence on the quality and safety of the space are weighed up. One of those interests is cultural history.

On behalf of the Minister of Education, Culture and Sciences the Cultural Heritage Agency designates immovable property as listed buildings.

The Agency also helps to care for these listed buildings with knowledge and money.

Based on its knowledge the agency advises, for example, on how to incorporate the heritage objects into zoning plans or on the best approach to a more large-scale restoration.

The government uses subsidies to encourage owners and managers to maintain their listed buildings properly and systematically.

An amount of 40 million euros is available for maintenance to listed buildings every year. A further 120 million euros has been spent on eliminating restoration backlogs during the past four years.
